The Big Pit is post-apocaliptic. It's not hard to forget that other life exists. Even the January sun is swallowed quickly by its sheer, blasted walls. The great steel frame of the mine elevator stands beyond chain link and barbed wire fencing, an abandoned guard tower. Escape would be possible, but all of us fashion our own custom-built traps, and for twelve years I have worked to be able to return to this stark place where a truth is what you make, and not what you're told.
