A leg fell off.  It was always a probability.  A band running through the right haunch into the paws was cracked and punky, but I have so much respect for the stone, and such a developed distain for the risk of breakage, that I pressed on with a demonstrably misplaced faith in spot glue and a blowtorch.  (It's been so cold.)  Now the thing is stabilized.  Anyone who is put off by fallibility should be advised to advert their eyes.  Anyone who has paid attention to this tale will know that damage must be dealt with.  Would-be buyers will not catch a break.
